What's Your Map?

I was recently invited to join award-winning historian, writer and broadcaster Professor Jerry Brotton on What’s Your Map?, the acclaimed Oculi Mundi podcast exploring the stories, ideas and people behind maps. Jerry has spent more than two decades writing and broadcasting about history and cartography, and brings together an unusually diverse range of guests, from historians, scientists and writers to artists, explorers and cultural custodians.

Previous guests have included bestselling author William Dalrymple, Yale historian and cartographer Bill Rankin, explorer Cecilie Skog, archaeologist Jago Cooper and broadcaster Nicholas Crane, among many others. The podcast was awarded Gold for Education at the 2025 British Podcast Awards, with Jerry also receiving Bronze in the Best Presenter category at the Audio Producers Association Awards.

In my episode, The Craft of Globemaking, Jerry and I discuss the making, conservation and history of globes through an 1810 celestial globe by James Kirkwood & Sons, as well as the enduring craft of globemaking and my own journey within this rare and increasingly endangered tradition.
